Young Alex used to be the leader of the Liberal Party, until a number of blunders forced him out. The worst of those blunders was his telling a joke at a formal dinner in which he was promoting the Liberal party slogan 'the things that matter' and referring to wife-bashing husbands as 'the things that batter'.

Unfortunately for Alex, this was during the dizzying power-decade of feminism and political correctness and the Liberal-hating vixen moved in for the kill. It is hard to imagine someone so insensitive to political manipulation being appointed to Foreign Minister, but they did it.
