A bizarre ritual practiced by catholics which is supposed to absolve them of guilt for
sins committed.
The idea is that telling a priest about the things you have done wrong, expressing regret, and doing the appropriate penance
(three 'Hail Marys' or some-such) absolves you of all guilt (and therefore responsibility) for your actions.
