Many people may like to see elements of dark-age European feudalism in many modern democracies, but a key characteristic of such feudalism was the lack of choice in choosing their landlord (who was also their employer). A 13th century peasant would have found it quite difficult to pack up and move to the village 50 miles down the road. In a modern democracy, moving - and hence changing employers - is relatively easy. There is no monopoly of trade.
