Many of these atoms together make up an almost useless relatively inert yellow metal which is not even very useful for making jewelry out of. It has to be mixed with other metals to harden it, and then it loses its color to the color of the metal it is mixed with.

The only extraordinary thing about gold is how many people use it as a measure of wealth. Somehow people think that a useless piece of yellow metal in a locked room makes them happier or better off.

It just goes to show that wealth is in the eye of the beholder.
