Mohammed is the fundamental problem with modern Islam. Most religions are about control. They dictate codes of behavior and codes of belief for their believers to follow. Islam is worse than most in this regard. The concept of live-and-let-live was not part of Mohammad's philosophy, and has never been a part of Islam. Dreadful things have been done in the names of many religions, including Christianity. However these actions were a corruption of Christian beliefs, not a corollary to it. Christianity went through a reformation, which exposed many of the Christian wrongdoings. Islam has never had a reformation, and there are no serious calls for such a thing. And realistically, it may be possible to do so.
How can a religion based on the teaching of a violent murderer possibly renounce violence and murder?
