People often say 'you must respect other people's opinions'. This is ignorant rubbish.
Some people believe that the earth is flat. Some people believe that there are fairies at the bottom of the garden. Some believe that the first two people ran around a big garden with an apple tree covering their naughty bits with fig leaves. Some believe that Elvis is still alive, that JFK was abducted by aliens and that Adolf Hitler was a good bloke. Do you have an obligation to respect those opinions? Of course not.
When someone says 'you have an obligation to respect belief X' they are effectively saying 'I have a right to tell you what to think'. They don't.
You do not own another person's mind. They own their own mind, and hence have the right to whatever beliefs they keep there. Likewise you own your own mind, and have no obligation to keep those beliefs there.
You have an obligation to respect other people's right to have those opinions - regardless of how stupid they are.
