Understanding is based on a stack of four elements, here in reverse:
- Data is just a collection of differentiable elements - such as zeros and
ones. Computers store data. Data by itself is
useless - an intelligent entity may be able to spot patterns in it, but without
context, that is nothing.
- Information is data which is ordered and can be usefully processed. Computers process information.
- Knowledge is the purpose of information - it allows one to usefully
do things. Humans have knowledge. Some would say that
computers have very limited knowledge.
- Wisdom is the purpose of knowledge - it is not just the ability to
do something, but the successful exploration of why. Humans strive towards
wisdom.
Arts students like to believe they are learning wisdom and that other disciplines are just
learning knowledge. Whether the average Arts graduate is rich in wisdom is left
as a judgement to the reader.
