Isn't it fair to assume that your narrow self-interest is being served by the perpetuation of the elite political regime? Maybe the king (Henry the 8th) was right, and he really was inspired by divine right - a divine right eagerly claimed in 1688 by your "normal" friends who had the connections to get elected to the legislature. But if he was wrong, what reason is there to think that an electoral market, regulated by the incumbents for generations, could outperform a free market?
