It was terminal stupidity on his part - and there are plenty of other people sitting in jail whose main crime is stupidity. He treated the court with contempt, as if these sorts of things only concern the little people. As the saying goes, if you want to know what God thinks of money you only have to look at who he gives it to. If I'd been the judge I'd have felt like sending him down too. But, yeah, the sentence was over the top - a single month of periodic detention, followed by a Community Service Order, would have improved his character without wrecking his life.
