There's practically no distinction between looting and vandalism. We're not talking about professional antiquity thieves here. How many priceless, but dull pieces would the average looter smash in order to find the shiny gold ones? In any case, Iraqis are not slavering Taliban adherants who need to be freed from Islamism (and I hope they never will be). They're not bound by 1,000 year old strait-jackets - just 30 year old ones. And it's pieces from that period they really are going out of their way to destroy.
