Landes' "The Wealth and Poverty of Nations". Actually many farmers are their own worst enemy. Many
are agrarian socialists who actually have a problem with
private ownership (go figure that one). I was arguing with a farmer recently about the sale of the
Snowy Hydro Company, and he proclaimed that "NOTHING THE GOVERNMENT
OWNS SHOULD EVER BE SOLD!", to which I replied "not even that
20 acres you are trying to buy from the PPP [Pastorial Protection Board]?" There was about ten seconds of shocked
silence followed by ".. probably not". If you can't even convince farmers that nationalization of
farmland is a bad idea, then what chance do you have?
