You forget that at one time, Dar al Islam was the world's powerhouse of science, civics and economics. It had very enlightened societies, if you consider the alternatives during that period. There are other counter-examples - the Greeks and Romans were pagan/polytheistic for the most part, yet they are the basis of European/Western culture and a big reason for that culture's success. For that matter, Christianity might have died away or still be a minor sect of Judaism if the Romans hadn't adopted it. Then there are the Chinese to consider - at one time the world's superpower, without ever being a Christian culture. Of course, I agree with your premise, some cultures are better than others. But don't be too glib. Read Guns Germs and Steel if you haven't already for an excellent overview of what might make some societies thrive and others wither.
