I did a degree in Engineering and I still regard myself as an Engineer even though I am mostly a manager.

I know that the words "there" and "their" have different meanings. And I know the difference and have done all my adult life. However for the longest time in my writing I always used "there" in all situations. Recently I got more careful and started using the word "their". However soon I found that when I re-read my writing the word "their" had now crept in everywhere even when I should have stuck with "there".

As I said I know the difference. However most days my brain does not want to play ball. It is happy with one or the other but does not like having both within a body of work.

I have never have this problem with "waist" and "waste" or "weather" and "whether" or "to" and "two".

I generally get it right in the end but it does mean that I have to religiously review and edit everything I write.

For nearly all of second class in primary school I insisted that the word "one" should be spelt "won". I failed my spelling test every week because of this. However I felt satisfied that even if the language was wrong I was at least doing my bit to rectify it. The futility of my cause only dawned on me later.
