If you think the poor are well served by current social systems then I admire your 'glass-is-half-full' attitude. However, if you think giving people their dignity and freedom back is going to destroy them, I think you underestimate the ability of humans. Government is like a drug. When people are on it, they can't imagine life without it. But the reality is that free people have been able to find voluntary solutions for most problems through history. And when we've failed, the government hasn't done any better.
