Yes ALB, the smart, beautiful, luck SHOULD subsidise the dumb, ugly and unfortunate - at least to the extent that those traits reflect chance rather than personal effort. That is a value judgment that you may not like, but alas for you we live in a democracy and most people are closer to that view than your miserable "survival of the fittest" world. So "who determines what you should get other than the market?" Answer: the people. Why is it better? Because the people can consider both equity (ever heard of that?) and efficiency, whereas the market can only consider efficiency!
