Yes ALB, the smart, beautiful, luck SHOULD subsidise the dumb, ugly and unfortunate - at least to the extent that those traits reflect chance rather than personal effort.

That is a value judgment that you may not like, but alas for you we live in a democracy and most people are closer to that view than your miserable "survival of the fittest" world.

So "who determines what you should get other than the market?" Answer: the people. Why is it better? Because the people can consider both equity (ever heard of that?) and efficiency, whereas the market can only consider efficiency!

As for your use your socialism slippery slope argument to attempt to discredit this point, the fact that you need to draw on such a long bow reveals more about your position than it does about mine.
