I believe politicians enter politics for the policy & principles - rationalising that power is the necessary pre-requisite to make a difference. Then, they confuse the means with the ends and start to spend all their time concentraing on keeping power. Policy becomes a necessary thing required for the maintainence of power and pollies turn populist. This is why politicians celebrate re-election, but don't celebrate the passing of good policy.
