They are adept in the art of cover-your-arse. UAI marks mean you can do basic calculus, chemistry or regurgitate the dominant paradigm on social sciences or philosophy (basically English literature). It is more of an indicator of how hard you wish to work whilst others are getting drunk and exploring their sexuality. With the smart kids (who probably don't try too hard or if they work, they enjoy the study), there are some terribly stupid kids who get good UAI scores. Of course new teachers are illiterate - generation Y had the phoney idea that grammar etc did not matter foisted on them by feckless idiots at various Education Depts.
