"Would you let each person decide how they spend the money they earn, and decide who to give it to (if anybody)? (left answer - no, the government should take a big chunk and spend it for them)" Despite the fact that the government takes taxes from me, I still end up with most of it in my pocket and am free to spend it in a massive number of ways. I may not have absolute freedom, but I have significant freedom. I like it, I like others having it, and I am left.
