>> Taiwan should have declared independence years ago - but the stubborn bastards
>> were still claiming that they should rule mainland China! Now the balance of
>> power is shifting. If they don't declare independence soon - then they may
>> never get it. Indeed, given recent american comments, it may already be too
>> late. You are being a little harsh. The KMT ruled Taiwan (ROC) and locked up 'dissidents'
who spoke out against them. Being pro-independence until recently would get you
a prison sentence at best. Taiwan became a democracy less than 20 years ago,
and had a difficult legacy to overcome before rationality could prevail. In retrospect a declaration of independence in 1951 would have made the
world a better place now, but that's like blaming the Iraqis for gassing the
Kurds .. >> A shame really - because the entire 'one china' policy is based on the same
>> racist principle that drove Hitler (minus the killing of Jews). Actually I think it is more than that. The Chinese government hates Taiwan
because its success undermines everything they claim to believe
in. Western-style democracy will work along side Chinese culture, and will lead
to (relative) freedom and prosperity. No Chinese politician has any integrity while Taiwan remains free.
