Re the possible 'world's best' fire service that might result from the fires: if we had private fire services, those in suburbs adjoining the forest would be interested in paying for a top-notch service (and paying for such a service could reduce their fire insurance premia), while those in other suburbs wouldn't have to pay for it all.
