Entirely right, Strawman. The fact is that states who sign these ridiculous treaties (on everything from biodiversity to family law) are obviously entitled to determine how to implement their obligations under said treaties. Whether or not some unemployed French bureaucrat on some UN work for-the-dole scheme, or some corrupt Indonesian official, whose palm is not so greased-up as he would like, believe Austrlia is living up to its "human rights" agreements, the fact remains that the Australian government has established certain rules about such matters which should be applied fairly and universally. If people don't like the tough approach which, as stated on these boards, is geared to deterring arrivals, they are free to propose a better system. Of course, bagging Howard, Vanstone, Ruddock et al, is just sooo much more fun! (Dude) That, and it allows the big government lefties to pretend they have something to say that the big government tories haven't already said. More open borders are the answer, in my view (see previous post). Regards, Adam
