I think 1/80 is fine to me. I thought you wanted to correct for the current age distribution. I don't see how it overstates deaths if you calculate it each year. Why can't you just estimate the growth rate of both parts of the population and use those. I can't remember off the top of my head the function you need because the growth rate will change over time due to the constant. (i.e., will decrease) but someone surely must have worked it out (it sounds like 1st year biology to me). being lazy you could just do this by counting each year pop1 = start value;
