Anon - "Some time later he caught on fire." Would that time be measured in hours, minutes, seconds, or milliseconds? Perhaps the full story will vindicate the police actions, but really - if government officials (ie police) refuse to release details about their actions then they can expect to be criticized based on the details which are known. This a common 'democratic' government stategy - release as few details as possible, with the knowledge that once 'due process' is completed, the news will be so old that no-one will be bothered reporting it. I am not prepared to give the benefit of doubt to a government which uses this strategy.
