It's rare that I agree with two posters of opposing views, but I agree with
both Stewart and TN. Given that
- None of the accusations of 'liar' leveled against Little Johnny
have actually been proven (suspecting that children may not have been thrown
overboard but still claiming that 'I have no information to disprove it' are
technically consistent; and
- Some of the claims, even if true are not lies (claiming that we won't
have a GST, and then going to an election to give people the choice is hardly a
lie - it's merely a choice given to the Australian people)
If I promise my mistress that I'll take her skiing on the
weekend, and then on Thursday night give her the choice of either skiing or
going to Rio for the weekend, I hardly deserve to be called a liar. .. except perhaps by my wife, but that's another story. Anyway, I will not protest in the streets on this. I think the far greater danger here is effect of redefining 'lie' to mean a
broken promise, which clouds the whole issue of honesty and truth.
