It can be said that there are some elements of Al-Nisa that can appear harsh from Western eyes, but highlighting these parts of the sura is to scare-monger and miss the main message, which is about the appropriateness of modesty in dress and conduct by women. Go to Cronulla or indeed any coastal beach and you will see dress and conduct by young women that is anything but modest. It can be said and has been that "raunch culture" is culprit here. Also on TV we see everyday more pornography and celebration of adultury and breakdown of marraige under banner of freedom. Also we now see more magazine available such as Zoo which just released. And yet as against this, does the Prime Minister criticise this lack of morality and self-respect? No, he criticises women who wear the Burkha! I personally do not support wearing of the Burkha in all circumstances, for example when driving for which it was not intended, although it does lessen exposure and in that way offensiveness and risk of attack. But there is need for all cultures - aboriginal, British, Italian, New Zealand, Greek and Muslim etc etc - to assimilate in multiculturalism and live in harmony and for the best of all cultures to become Australian culture. In that way, the multiculturalism that Australia Government promised when much needed immigrants came here can be shared.
