Hi Naomi,

Thanks for you letter, and sorry for the delay in replying. Working hard .. making money .. minimizing taxes ..

Quite frankly I can't offer you any great advice on taking a position on your assignment. My brother did a unit on Aboriginal issues at university many years ago (a compulsory part of the course I believe). He knew he would fail if he was honest in his essays, but thought a good strategy was to adopt a 'fair minded' approach by pointing out that white civilization dstroyed Aboriginal culture, but Aboriginal culture was very fragile, and would have collapsed as soon as it came into contact with any of the more technological advanced societies. He just passed. Just.

So it depends on whether you want a good mark, or whether to make a political statement.

On the subject of '.. the European forefathers of Australia and today are partially to blame for their condition', let me express my view ..

You are not to blame for giving someone more choices.

No-one is a victim of greater choice. If someone offers you a metal axe to replace your stone axe, you don't have to take it. You can continue to use your stone axe if you want. If someone offers you alcohol, you don't have to take it. Drugs? Just say no. Rocket propelled supersonic transmat beam hover cars? Just don't buy them. The forefathers are guilty only in cases where they forcibly limited choice, not where they added choice.

As for having civilization 'pushed' onto them in a short period of time, well .. I went from not existing to being a functional responsible adult in just 18 years. Having civilization 'pushed' on to me in 18 short years was never really a problem. Why would it be a problem for anyone else? It took Europeans thousands of years to develop the technology (knowledge and skills) which the Aborigines have the choice of using (or not using). This does not make them victims.

As for domestic violence, if you are referring to violence against childen, then yes, the government is negligent. The only legitimate function of government is to minimize the initiation of force. They can't even manage that.

Thanks for your letter, and best of luck with your studies.
