Why a war in the first place? Islamic armies for the first time in their history have been prevented from their normal occupation of pillage, plunder and conquest of infidel lands. In any case the only lands worth plundering, are now in the West. Using regular Islamic armies was a non-starter as they would be decimated in any contest with the West. But the Quranic injunction to wage war on the infidel though, still stands and hence the recourse to this means of warfare. This method is particularly suited in this time in our history, as we have made abundantly clear that we will go to absurd lengths not to harm civilians. The road is therefore clear to fight on a battlefield in which we refuse to fight. Churchill in response to the aerial bombing of British cities had this to say- 'They have sown the wind and now they will reap the whirlwind' And who is to argue with him?
