Easy thing to say. What modern farming techniques exactly? I assume, for lack of other evidence, you talk about feedlotting animals. I guess you've never seen a well run feedlot? Animals inside are at least content, if not happy indeed. I just came back from a seminar today on feedlotting lambs, which included such strategies as adding toys like beachballs for the lambs to play with, on the theory that happy sheep are more profitable sheep. I don't see the horridness.... However, if you want to be certain, buy only meat from a Quality Assurance programme, to gaurantee that the industry codes of practice have been met. I'm not sure there is a branded QA lamb product available in eastern Australia at this moment, but any beef with MSA branding will come from a QA programme (Hereford Prime, for example). Semms to me a more sensible step then forswearing meat altogether...
