I don't think there is any political reason to care about the suffering of animals. For my mind, it is hypocritcal to oppose bad treatment of animals while being a meat-eater. Surely, the first political right we give to any entity, if we are being consistent and honest to ourselves, would be the right not to be killed. If someone ignores that right but insists on others, then I suggest they are partaking in an intentional act of backward reasoning to reach a convenient conclusion. Similar to the warnicks and Kyoto advocates. :p
