» What is an attempt to commit a crime?   2004-02-05 13:49 Leo

Traditionally (English common law, your mileage may vary), an attempt is the intent (which should be proved by the chat, and I'm sure the fellow mentioned it in the chat to make his case) and an overt act towards the commission of the crime. Now, showing the intent could quite clearly be shown in the chat, and the overt act is showing up.

Where I live, this would be charged as "Attempted rape and absue of a child under 16." If you are under 16, you are presumed to be unable to consent (it's the statutory rape law in Massachusetts).

A search warrant for souvenirs of previous conquests would generally be appropriate and usually revealing.
