» Strawman's naive understanding of society   2006-02-15 14:55 Jacob Jones

I looked up your definition of "prostition" on your site and what does it say? - "Prostitution is a victimless crime - a voluntary and consensual transaction between informed adults."

This is wrong not just because many prostitutes are forced into it and do not have equal power, but also and more importantly because it fails to take account of the broader effects on society; it is another example of naive Libertarian philosophy unravelling the social fabric, pretending there are no victims when in fact many if not all of us suffer. Prostitution is treating something that is sacred as a commodity to be bought and sold; and with the sale of sex goes the respect that women deserve because men, and women themselves, come to see them as only "sex objects" rather than as people. Look at the behaviour of young women today, committing unspeakable acts because they have lost so much self-respect due to the prevalence of "Raunch Culture".

Every successful society since creation has recognised the need for social mores to be upheld and respected for the betterment of the society; whether those mores be enforced by church, tribe or, more recently as society becomes more complex, the state. Your Libertarian theology is a recipe for social decay and, ultimately, personal decay.

God created man in His own image and the two should become one-flesh within marraige; but prostitution cheapens sex, cheapens committment; undermines self-esteem and relationships and causes significant problems for society more broadly; not just for the people who engage in prostitution. Yet the one who goes by the name Strawman cannot see beyond the immediate - another example following ABL of a Libertarian with an insufficiently sophisticated intellectual framework to make useful comments about society.
