It is an undisputable fact that the failure of teachers wages to keep pace with their equivalents in the private sector has led to a decline in the quality of new teachers. Bright graduates go where the money is. Banking is an excrutiatingly dull and grinding career but it happens to pay the best and therefore attracts the finest minds. However, just as important in my mind, is the insane refusal to implement performance-related pay. Teachers do need a pay rise, but only the good ones.
