You can't always trust a politician, true. But it doesn't necessarily follow that you can never trust a politician. The job basically dictates that you are trying to please everyone at once. This is of course impossible, the result being politicians stretch the truth and even lie. The public, sensibly, let them get away with this to some degree, provided overall they do a decent job.
