Most people want to reduce crime (or at least reduce crime in which there is a genuine victim).

The disagreement comes about how best to reduce it. The intellectual elite / social scientists have convinced many Australians that the best way to deal with a murderer, rapist, thief or robber is to emotionally and financially breast-feed them a lot, and it will turn them into productive, caring sensitive new-age guys.

Others would prefer to build more prisons.
