They have the good fortune of having lots of oil, (but not enough to dissuade them from stealing some from their Iraqi neighbors) the misfortune of being invaded by Iraq in 1990, and the good fortune of having the Americans come to their rescue 5 months later. These three issues are not entirely unrelated.
