Whereas once upon a time there was little need to speak to anyone in your neighboring village, and no need at all to speak to anyone in your neighboring country we now have the ability to communicate with people over the world.

This gives us tremendous abilities to take advantages of massive economies of scale, which would have been unimaginable to our ancestors. However to take advantages of these we must be able to communicate with these people, and that means speaking a common language. While the French may believe they are protecting their culture by resisting the slow invasion of the English language into their country, they are in fact hastening the demise of their culture.

There is little point clinging to a cultural backwater simply because it is your cultural backwater. Writing is for communication, communication requires a common language. The most efficient thing to do is to choose the language that will become the dominant one, and adopt it. English spelling will not be the dialect that the world adopts. There is little point continuing to use it.

This is not to say that US culture should be embraced and local culture should be abandoned. Culture is ideas, language is functional, and is in a sense the ultimate democracy (which is why the left want to desperately to hijack it).
