» Direct referenda v representative democracy   2004-08-18 19:11 2dogs

One of the reasons often given in favour of representative democracy and against direct referenda is that people don't know what's best for them, and need to leave it to experts.

It's absurd: knowing when somebody is honest, sensible and competent is a lot harder than knowing if a particular policy is good for you.

Representative democracy requires the public to be a lot smarter, and they are just not up to the task.
