» Competition is about opportunity, not incentive   2004-11-02 07:10 2dogs

however i disagree that competition is the only way to spur innovation and improvement. it's not the only incentive. i personally am very rarely motivated by competition. i am motivated by things such as: curiosity; the desire to do things properly; and sometimes the desire to do something good for society. there are so many things that people can be motivated by, other than competition.

Competition is not needed because it provides an incentive. You might have all the inherent motivation in the world, but that means nothing if a state owned monopoly does not put it to use, and you aren't permitted to compete with that state owned monopoly. Competition ultimately means that people who are innovative get the chance to have their ideas implemented.
