I don't see a problem with the Australian government calling on Mexico to block dolphin importation. Freedom of speech, surely. Mexico is free to ignore them. Regarding your piece on politicians, you seem to have a fairly narrow view of what motivates them. What about a desire to serve the community in whatever way they think best? Although I agree special interest groups have too much sway with pollies, I find it hard to buy your argument that "They [pollies] are merely the conduits for the wishes of the special interest groups they represent." It's not unknown for pollies to make decisions that go against the interests of their special interest groups. Also, it's easy to look at some decision a pollie has taken and ascribe it to a particular interest group that may benefit from it when that group really had little influence over the decision being made.
