> Yes. Mad as hell, actually.

OK - glad we've got that covered... :)

> The Taliban weren't exactly a military threat to the US. And bloodthirsty despots may take note of their fate before encouraging acts of terrorism against the West.

I'm not totally sure if you had a point with this. I mean, you wrote the above in response to me saying that Australia should occupy Indonesia... and I'm not sure if you're agreeing, disagreeing, making a point or argument... or just bringing up a different topic in a strange place?

but sure... the war on terror certainly has increased the disincentive for countries to support terrorism. I've never denied that and yet have been able to maintain an intellegent opposition to the war on terror, war on iraq and all other fun exploits of our government...

=======================

> Dozens of murdered Australians is something I feel pretty emotional about actually, and I think that most Australians feel the same way.

that's fine - but then please stand aside while thinkers who can put their emotions aside make the decisions that determine whether many more people live or die.

======================

> Fundamentally I disagree with the popular model of fundamentalist Islam that they just want to 'live and let live'. They don't.

sure... I agree. Osama wants to kill and be killed. But this isn't a sufficient argument. It is a non-sequitor to point this 'fact' out, and then say that we should invade Indonesia, spend more on defence, invade Iraq, sends troops to Georgia, crack down on civil liberties, send troops to Afghanistan et. al

what is missing is how all of that stuff actually makes the world a better place.

=====================

> If your point is that we have outsourced our decision making to the government, yes.

actually, I was being sarcastic. :) and I was never asked if I wanted to outsource my decisions...

===============================

> However that is what most people think the government is for.

irrelevant. and you know it too crazy cow man! :)

=============================

> Do we outsource too much? Yes. Would individuals make better decisions than the government? Mostly, yes. Always? No.

true, true, true. Do we have the choice of only having the good government decisions and leaving the rest to individuals? history would say no. does the government make more good or bad decisions? I'd say more bad.

logical conclusion. we'd be better off if they made none. but we're getting side-tracked now...

================

> Thanks for your comments 24601.

oh, no no no - thank you... :)

================

> I will point out that I have never actually said that going into Baghdad is a good thing - just that it would be strategically foolish for us not to follow the US.

indeed, though I'm not sure what we'd lose by not following them? surely it is possible to maintain a defensive pact with a country without it turning into an offensive pact?

=========================

> Does it annoy me that we are getting pulled into the coming war? Yes. But my cost-benefit analysis suggests that it may be the lesser of the two evils.

...and the benefit of going to war is?

======================

> Keep safe.

no :P
