In 1996, the Pope issued a statement from his science advisers, that in the
light of 'recent evidence' that (Darwinian) evolution could be regarded as
'more than a theory'. It was up on the vatican.va site, but I can't seem to find it
with Google now. It is presumably convenient for the pope to continue to
rewrite history. It never got much publicity, but it was an interesting attempt to buy
credibility: the intellectuals could dismiss differences between the scientific
and Catholic views and uneducated hordes in South America and such-like would
never even find out about it. Having said that, the intellectual Catholics that I knew felt free to interpret
it as really meaning nothing, and just continued to believe in apples, serpents
and fig leaves. But I digress from the central point. The only people who don't accept
Darwinian evolution are:
- Some idiot God-botherers who have no real say, and
- The odd Arts student who claims that 'new evidence has created a new
theory'. They can never actually say what the theory is, or what the evidence
is - they just say "My Professor said something about it". One of the benefits
of being in the intellectual elite I guess.
But basically the fight is over. The original manifesto I wrote started out as a
series of arguments for Selfish Gene Theory,
but there was little point. Richard Dawkins has laid out the arguments better
than I ever will. Time to move on.
