But that's the point - democracy is bad - a democratic republic is good.

Democracy ends in statism. Ingrained statism that some people cannot imagine there being an alternative too. A democracy forces the state's beleif that the majority, are always right, to do as they please. A republic (in the classical sense of the word)gives a very weak form of statism that makes it difficult to change the fundamental rules and take liberty away from others is more consistent to a pro liberty ideal. The restriction to change institutions and deprive liberty from ourselves is a state beleif that a republic brings. This may be obvious, but I though that if a minarchist/objectivist society was to be set up, a republic with democratically elected officers is the form of Government it would take. The UN will always make Governments hold more power over their people, despite the cries of "one world Government" conspiracy theorists, and even if the UN becomes some supernational Government. The UN is not just undemocratic, it will always impose more rules on us. For example, why would the US, with their comprehensive Bill of Rights, need to approve and adopt the UN Declaration of Human rights? Selective approval of paticular clauses may lead to a law that is conducive to social engineering.

It's not the owning of assets - but the ability to control and legally posess them, and competively bid for their best use that creates conditions for wealth creation - Ireland and Singapore did not become rich due to handouts.
