>> I'm not sure I u/stand why you hate the ALP so much? How as Libertarians can >> you prefer the Conservative Howard government? (or do you?)

Don't assume that the bloggers here agree with each other, or that all bloggers necessarily describe themselves as libertarian.

But for me .. yes I prefer the Conservative Howard Government, in spite of all its faults.

>> The ALP is not the socialist party it used to be. It introduced economic >> rat. before the 'libs' did after all.

Yes, they are even more hypocritical than the Coalition. But I don't know whether that makes them a more attractive voting proposition.

Spending $AU96Billion on the credit card on my behalf didn't exactly endear them to me. Then having Kim (Fatboy) Beasley insist that it wasn't a problem because we had the means to service the debt didn't do much for me either.

But credit where it's due. Paul (Scumbag) Keating did start a lot of the economic reforms which we are benefiting from now.

>> Also, they're socially progressive - which is after all what you stand for >> isn't it?

Socially progressive is good, but a policy which says "Taking heroin is OK only if it is subsidized by the taxpayer" isn't exactly socially progressive is it? Overall, the ALP's implementation of 'social progressiveness' is making more people subsidize the activities of minority groups.

Forcing me to subsidize homosexuals, single mothers or Aboriginal dance groups is not actually socially progressive - it's just more theft.

Passing legislation to force me to recognize homosexual marriage is not socially progressive - it's a further violation of my rights to choose whether to recognize or not recognize it. The answer is to remove legislation, not add to it.

Frankly, I would like to see governments stop discriminating against homosexuals and drug addicts, but it actually doesn't affect me much.

I would prefer that my taxes were not wasted on catching, convicting and imprisoning people on drug or prostitution charges, but the simple fact is that it doesn't affect me much. I have no interest in taking drugs or visiting prostitutes (or even prostituting myself or my family), so the only loss to me is the taxes the government steals from me to control it. Since the ALP are in favor of stealing even more taxes from me (to subsidize it), I'll vote for the financially conservative party.

>> As I see it: ALP - somewhat small gov't and totally socially liberal LIBS- >> totally socially conservative and small gov't.

You used 'ALP' and 'small government' in the same sentence without a negation? Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

>> Doesn't labor have more in common with you?

No.

The ALP is not the socialist evil that it used to be, and I have a creeping suspicion that Maddog Latham would give tax cuts to middle income earners (thereby evening out effective marginal tax rate inequities). But Terje has it right: the loopy-left factions are just too strong.

.. and we won't even mention border protection policies.
