>> And so what is the relevance to libertarianism? What do you say the
>> libertarian position should be in relation to this family? I would be happy to see Australia become a freer society - indeed more
libertarian. People who call themselves libertarian are split on whether
an open border would make us more or less free. It is true that people come to Australia for a better life - and that
includes freedom. But so many don't understand what freedom is, or what creates
it. Time and time again they bring the weapons of oppression with them - the
culture, the mind-set, and the political views. They seem to want to make
Australia 'just like home', and set about to do it. The immigrants who came to this country half a century ago came for the
opportunity to create wealth. Modern immigrants come for the opportunity to
help themselves to the wealth that other people have created. The next time I hear an immigrant describe Australia as 'The Lucky Country',
I'm going to strangle them. Australia is probably the harshest inhabited
continent on the planet (Antarctica is not really inhabited in any meaningful
sense). We are in the midst of the worst drought in 100 years, and no-one is
starving. No one is even going hungry. Some people are grumpy about not being
able to afford a new car, but that is about all. Even a minor drought in Africa
results in hundreds of thousands of deaths, and calls for 'responsibility' from
the international community. Luck? What made Australia 'lucky'? Nothing. Luck had nothing to do with it. If I seem a little unsympathetic to would-be immigrants, it's only because I am
sick of them getting off the plane and putting their hands straight in my
pocket while demanding government-enforced affirmative action and refusing any
responsibility to integrate while, at the same time, calling me racist. The quality of a person can be measured by the arguments they make, and
claiming a right to live in Australia because they have cheated the system for
so long, and haven't taught their children to write in Chinese speaks volumes
about them. No, they are not welcome.
