"Only a deeply religious person of the libertarian faith could wonder aloud at this. How do you think John Howard has achieved such immense strides in making his agenda law in the last month? I suppose you'd rather stay pure than be effective. That's your right of course." I always knew Henry Bolte was a libertarian at heart. He utterly despised the national/country party, as a country Liberal. He got things done - even a very unpopular decision on law and order. Hey, how did Howard get the FTA passed when the US won't liberalise agriculture for another 15 years, and we have a comaprative advantage in that, and the National party ostensibly represents farmers? At times he doesn't even bother negotiating. Howard can implement liberal policies without negotiating, or going against principles. When he does, it is higly impractical - if your only purpose is to hold onto power, your political allegiance is to the cult of your personality, not liberalism and not even social democracy.
