"Australians who oppose a national identity card must have lots of hidden secrets they wish to keep hidden. The majority of honest, law abiding Australian citizens do not oppose the ID card." Like John Howard? Robert Hill? Howard is lucky that people forget he was Treasurer during Fraser's final term as PM. I do oppose it on civil liberties grounds - but I oppose it on economic grounds - it simply won't do squat to fight terrorism, but it will have high costs to implement. While a more expensive biometric card has merit, paticularly with the welfare system where people have up to 20 mulitple identities, why do I need it when I haven't and assume never to receive money from Centrelink/DSS? Personally I prefer a better incentive system with regards to welfare traps and being more selective with benefits - i.e I don't see the benefits in taxing those on partial Newstart at a rate exceeding 100%, nor a benefit in having the proportion of society on the disability support pension being five times it was when the programme begun. I can't see how the card can work here.
