Hands up all those in favour of freeing them? Right. There'll be a special tax that applies only to you, and that covers all the costs of the community of freeing the detainees, including their accomodation, medical, income, crimes and torts, and so on. Fair's fair. Then the 'we as a society' mob get to put their money where their mouth is, and leave unmolested those who disagree with their pious opinions.
