What I don't understand is why we need new laws that say blowing people up or plotting to blow people up is illegal. The British were able to foil the Gunpowder Plot 400 years ago without anti-terrorist legislation and without an organised police force (there wouldn't be a police force in London until 1829), so why can't our cops bust the bad guys with the powers they already possess? Of course they used torture to get a signed confession out of Fawkes, but they did discover him in the basement of Westminster with 2.5 tonnes of gunpowder and matches.
