I think you're wrong about Hicks. The more Labour go into bat on his behalf the more votes they'll lose. Just because the ABC and Sydney Morning Herald think he's a cross between Ghandi and Princess Diana doesn't mean the voters do. Remember all the fuss about the executed drug smuggler in Singapore? How 'everyone' was aghast at that? The polls showed that at least half the population were quite happy that he'd got what he deserved. Polls the media did nothing to publicise of course. This is a war. David Hicks was an illegal combatant in it. He wasn't fighting for a body which recognised the Geneva Convention or is recognised by it. The more he becomes a poster boy for the left, the more certain Mr Howard's re-election becomes.
